Alberta Record Lowered Again
Tip Top Tap etched his name in the Alberta Downs record books on Sunday afternoon courtesy of his 1:52 spin around the Lacombe oval for trainer/driver Rod Hennessy.
Tip Top Tap lowered the three-year-old colt track record by one-fifth of a second. The former mark was set by Blue Star Admiral in a Brad Gunn Stakes elimination on July 14 and equalled by Premium Attaction in the July 21 final. Tip Top Tap, a 1:53.3 elimination winner, finished third behind the record-holders in that final.
In Sunday's $5,600 fifth race, Tip Top Tap left from the outside post six and worked his way to the lead during the :28 opening panel. He then carved out middle fractions of :56.1 and 1:23.4 before kicking home in :28.1 for the one and a quarter length victory. Tip Top Tap paid $5.60 to win as the 9-5 second choice in the wagering while the favoured newcomer, Gable Blue Chip (J.F. Gagne), followed in second. Pedal Steel (Gerry Hudon) rounded out the top three finishers.
The Camystic-Tapioca Hanover sophomore colt is now a five-time winner for owner Lorne Duffield of Edmonton.
The overall sophomore male track record of 1:50.2 was set by gelding Clintons Escape in 2010 and also stands as the all-age track record.
