'Blessings,' 'Bouquet' Win 'Crocus' Splits
A set of $5,700 divisions of the Lady Crocus Pace, sponsored by Standardbred Canada and the MSSBA, highlighted Saturday’s card of racing at the Glenboro Fair in Manitoba, with Mixed Blessings and Throw The Bouquet proving to be the stars of the show.
Mixed Blessings, who was sent off as the 4-5 favourite in the opening contest, enjoyed a three-hole trip throughout the opening half while Make Your Mark sped through fractions of :31.1 and 1:02.1. Trainer/driver Kirk Rogers had Mixed Blessings on the move in the third quarter, and it didn’t take the three-year-old daughter of Blue Burner-Yesterdays Girl long to find her best stride. She held a narrow lead at the three-quarter pole in 1:33.2, and her :30.2 closing speed helped her draw clear by 2-1/2 lengths in a time of 2:03.4. Senga Watermark was second, with For The Roses taking home third prize.
Rogers co-owns the filly with Nicole Fontaine of Holland, MB, and together they’ve watched her manufacture a 2-1-0 record from her three trips to the track this season. The three-time winner upped her lifetime earnings to $4,525 with the win.
Throw The Bouquet took the other division in a career-best clocking of 2:06.2. The homebred, who is owned, trained and was driven to victory by Roland Rey of St. Claude, MB, led at every station. She zipped through panels of :32.1, 1:05 and 1:36.1 en route to notching the 2:06.2 decision over MB Swamp Donkey and Alcars May Spree.
It was just the third lifetime start for the filly, who boasts a 2-1-0 record and purse earnings of $3,837.
