Hoerdt Trainees Take Top Spots In Klein
Kelly Hoerdt trainees Barona Lilac and Skade swept the top two spots in the Saturday afternoon's $50,000 Ralph Klein Breeders Stakes for three-year-old pacing fillies at Alberta Downs.
Driven by Jim Marino, Barona Lilac got away fifth early on and sat off-the-pace for most of the mile before unleashing a :28-second final kicker to come through for the 1:54.4 triumph.
Skade (Brandon Campbell) was the early leader through a :27.4 opening panel, but gave way to another barn buddy, Emotions Run Wild (Kelly Hoerdt), who led the field through middle splits of :57.4 and 1:26 before fading in the stretch.
Skade finished one and three-quarter lengths behind the weaving winner while favourite American Passion (Gerry Hudon) rallied three-wide off cover to show after an elimination victory last weekend.
Sent postward at odds of 19-1, Barona Lilac paid $41.60 to win and combined with her 15-1 stablemate for a $401.50 exactor.
Hoerdt co-owns the American Gigolo-Solhem filly, who notched her first win in eight seasonal starts, with Blair Corbeil of Beaumont, Alta.
