Hanover's Handicapping Contest Final Set
A good crowd enjoyed beautiful weather and great racing at Hanover Raceway on Saturday night.
It was the fans final chance to qualify for the Survivor Final on July 20 and 50 fans took a shot at picking four winning horses in a row.
Only five of the 50 were successful and Perle Breadner of Markdale, Glenn Breadner of Owen Sound, Dan Border of Owen Sound, Sue Coleman of Walkerton and Pat Calhoun of Hanover will join 30 other qualifiers in the final next week sponsored by Country 93 radio. The final Survivor will win a 58-inch Hi-Def TV courtesy of Modern Appliances and Country 93. There are also prizes for second and third place.
On the track June’s driver of the month, J Harris, continued his winning ways in four of the 10 races, including the opener with Yo Gaba Gaba in 1:59.2. The win was especially nice for co-owner Mark Beaven of Dungannon, who celebrated his birthday at Hanover Raceway.
Harris also won race seven with six-year-old mare Victoria for owner Dominico Dicicco of London in 1:57. Harris followed with a win behind Risky Rich in race nine in 1:54.2 and the nightcap with Unique Shuffle in 1:56.4. That gives Harris 25 wins on the season, which is nine more than Trevor Henry of Arthur.
Hanover Raceway plays host to its first of three Ontario Sires Stakes events of the season next week as two-year-old colt pacers hit the track. The freshmen will compete for $90,000 in purse money. One of the 35 qualifiers for the Survivor contest will go home with a $1,500 TV package. Post time at Hanover Raceway is 7:30 p.m.
