Has Truro Been Saved?

Could there be racing and stabling at Truro Raceway past Sunday? Reports from Nova Scotia indicate that an eleventh hour deal could be in the works to give the 138-year-old facility life beyond this weekend.

According to the Truro Daily News, a group of local harness racing participants are working with the current operators - the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition - to keep live harness racing at the track for another two weeks and keep the facility in operation past that this Sunday.

“I feel 200 per cent better than I did yesterday,” said Steve Morton, president of both the Nova Scotia Harness Racing Industry and the Truro Harness Horse Owner’s Association, following an emergency meeting held Friday morning. We’re going to be able to race for the next two weeks.”

Morton added that the local horsemen would not be shut out of stabling or training at Truro.

The resolution came after a Friday morning meeting with Morton, local businessman and prominent trainer-owner Brent MacGrath, MLA Lenore Zann and NSPE commission members. A follow-up meeting is slated for early next week and at that time a proposal could be agreed upon that would give Truro Raceway a future beyond 2013.

Great news for all of harness racing, Truro is a very important part of our industry and hopefully will continue to be so in the future.
