Summerside Hosts Stakes-Filled Card
The two-year-old crop of 2013 was out in full force in Monday afternoon Canada Day racing for Callbeck Stakes action at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.
The 16-dash card had a familiar theme with three drivers dominating the action. Top Ontario driver Paul MacKenzie was in Summerside for the day and posted the fastest two wins of the Callbeck action.
His first win came in Race 6 with Silverhill Shadow winning his $5,400 Callbeck two-year-old colt pace division in 1:58.2 for trainer Thane Mann and owner Silverhill of Tignish, PEI.
MacKenzie also won a $5,400 Callbeck filly pace division in 1:58.3 with Elm Grove Inarush for trainer and co-owner Eddy Doucette and co-owners Blaine Thibeau, Gordon MacLeod and Grant Mann, all of Kensington, PEI.
Driver Gilles Barrieau had four wins on the day, including colts Settlement Request in 2:01 and Tobins Fusion in 1:59.3 both from his own barn. His other driving wins came with colt J J Laser for trainer Kevin MacLean in 2:01.1 and filly Lovineveryminute in 2:00.4 for conditioner Earl Watts.
Mike Stevenson also posted four driving wins on the afternoon, winning two pacing events for trainer Wade Sorrie with colt Pictonian Storm in 2:01.1 and filly Pictonian Sareta in 2:01, both owned by Daniel Ross of Belfast, PEI.
The other Callbeck pacing filly divisions were won by Libertys Gig (Ron Matheson) in 2:00.3 and Sea Anna Win (Earl Smith) in 2:01.2.
The fastest $4,200 Callbeck two-year-old trot division was won by Oceanview Rose and Stevenson for owner-trainer William Roloson of Belfast, PEI. Other winners in the two-year-old trot divisions were Saulsbrook Pippa (Joey Pineau) and B J Comanche (Clare MacDonald), both in 2:10.
The afternoon also featured three divisions of the $4,200 Maple Leaf trot. Stevenson had win number four of the afternoon as he took the quickest split in 2:04.3 aboard Oceanview Kate to give owner-trainer Roloson his second win of the day. The other divisions went to Money Show (Brian Andrew) in 2:05.1 and Taliesin (Marc Campbell) in 2:05.3.
While J J Laser and Barrieau won race 16 Callbeck two-year-old colt pace, it was an accident-marred event as Dumas Walker (Myles Heffernan) struck the wheel of Pictonian Caper (Bernard McCallum) and went down as the field went through the stretch. Dumas Walker was the only horse to go down, as all other participants finished the race unscathed. Johnny Heffernan, Myles’s brother, confirmed that the driver did not incur any injuries while the horse walked away with just a few scratches.
Live racing continues Thursday and Saturday evening at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at The Charlottetown Driving Park, while Summerside kicks off Lobster Carnival week racing next Sunday afternoon with the Governor’s Plate Invitational eliminations.
