Put It In Gear Delivers In 'Boomer' Final
After driver Justin Turcotte started the day with three consecutive wins in the opening races at Sudbury Downs, he put the exclamation mark on a successful Sunday afternoon with one last victory in the featured finale, the $21,400 Baby To Boomer Series Final aboard Put It In Gear.
Leaving from post nine, Turcotte was able to put his charge into the two-hole by the half-mile mark and eventually overtook the leading Matts Phil and David Dowling by the third quarter station en route to a four and a half length victory in 1:59.1.
The popular James Belanger trainee, who has now won three races in a row, returned $4.40 to his backers. Jet Airliner, with Richard Baker aboard, and 89-1 longshot Two Part Harmony, driven by Mike MacNeill, rounded out the top three finishers.
Put It In Gear is owned by Champlain Stables of Azilda, Ont. Unraced at two, the win was the fourth in 15 starts for the sophomore son of No Pan Intended.
Turcotte and the winning 'Boomer' connections were also victorious earlier on the eight-race card with Justlikejessejames ($12.50). Turcotte also doubled up for trainer Roger Brown and the Recall Racing Stable of Lively, Ont. steering Bubeleh Stone ($4) and Dervish Hanover ($3.70) to Sunday scores.
The Baby To Boomer Series is a late closer for horses that are five years old and younger and non-winners of one race or $7,500 in lifetime purses. Fillies and mares are allowed $10,000. Winners over $15,000 lifetime are not eligible.
