Ohio Sires Stakes Fillies Face Off
Scioto Downs Racino was host to three-year-old filly Ohio Sires Stakes races on Saturday (June 8).
Mitey Pretty Win picked a good time to break her maiden when she took the first $30,000 division for trotters in 1:59.2.
“Jim [trainer Jim Arledge Jr.] told me that she’s a little funny in the first turn and once you get her through there she ought to be okay,” said driver Kayne Kauffman. “So I just babied her and got her through it. Once I got her through the first turn, Jim said she has plenty of ability, she just been making some mistakes.”
“We bought her as a yearling and she just matured more this year,” explained Arledge. “She still has a little issue here and there with the turns and stuff like that. She’s nicer on a big track - we raced her at Lebanon and she couldn’t handle that. She’s coming along better and better.”
This was the first time Kauffman drove the filly by Victory Sam and Arledge picked him because he “can handle a trotter good and has a lot of patience.”
“She’s a very fast filly, I think she’ll learn to go fast once she gets her confidence built. But I’ve liked her all along; for what she’s went through, we kept with her and knew she could go enough.”
Another division went to race favourite Contessa Leigh and driver Sam “Chip” Noble, who crossed the wire in 1:57.2 by eight and a quarter lengths. Marty Wollam trains the filly by Full Count, who made over $93,000 as a two-year-old.
Kyle Ater took another near maiden filly to the Sire Stakes winner’s circle when he piloted Two Friskie to a neck win in 1:54.2 for trainer Mark Winters Sr. The filly by Feelin Friskie won her last start, a non-winners of one, more than two weeks ago in 1:56.
“She raced good that week, then last week when they cancelled and she hadn’t raced, we didn’t know how tight she would be, so she raced really well,” said Ater.
“The fractions were decent. They left me alone and she sprinted home and got to the wire first.”
The other division went to Pink Camo, who won by four lengths in 1:53.1. Tony Hall took the lines of the Pine Valley filly for trainer Ron Burke. She has been racing against older company at Scioto in the Open, but also at The Meadows in non-winners $8,000 last five races, where she took her seasonal best 1:52.3.
Sire Stakes action will come back to Scioto on Thursday, July 4 with a special 1 p.m. post time. Racing continues Wednesday (June 12) with the regularly scheduled 6:30 p.m. post time.
