Berosus Grinds Out Open Win
Berosus, a nine-year-old Angus Hall gelding, won the $11,000 Open Trot in a season’s best 1:58.3, for owners Michael Ouriel and Larry Vinik, at Buffalo Raceway Friday night (June 7) over a fast track.
Berosus ($24.80), dismissed by the bettors at 11-1, settled in fourth from post four with driver Drew Monti in the bike, as eventual second-place finisher Mythical Hall (Kevin Cummings) cut all the fractions in the race of :28.4, :59.1, and 1:29. As the field hit the top of the stretch, Berosus swung to the outside, after being first-over from the five-eighth pole, and with a :29.2 last quarter-mile beat the favourite by half a length at the wire. Hour Lavec (John Cummings Jr.) came in third.
The $5,500 winner's share of the purse put Berosus’ seasonal earnings at $35,181 and lifetime earnings at $280,781. The win was the eighth in 18 attempts this season for the Don Rothfuss-trained Berosus, who now boasts 51 victories in 150 lifetime starts.
Reinsman Jack Flanigen led all drivers with three wins on the card.
Racing will resume on Saturday June 8, with first post scheduled for 6:40 p.m. eastern time.
