'Nancy O' Wins GRR Mares Preferred
Driver Doug McNair worked out a perfect second over trip for Wiskywisky Nancy O behind the race favourite to pull off a mild upset in Wednesday night's featured $6,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred 3 Pace at Grand River Raceway.
Favourite Sweet Bet (Trevor Henry) recovered from an early break in stride when aiming for the lead, but was left parked out mid-pack. As she attempted to reel in the leader, Wiskywisky Nancy O moved off the pylons from fourth to pick up the cover. McNair then sent the bay mare three-wide down the backstretch and battled back and forth on top with the pacesetting Windsong Glamorous (Travis Henry) around the final turn before surging ahead at the wire for the 1:57 triumph. Windsong Glamorous settled for second three-quarters of a length back after carving out fractions of :29.4, :59.1 and 1:27.4. Future Life (J Harris) followed two lengths behind in third.
Wiskywisky Nancy O, a winner in the Preferred 3 at London's Western Fair Raceway two starts ago, paid $14.40 to win as the 6-1 third choice.
Brent Belore trains the five-year-old daughter of Mach Three for Embro owners Alana and Dylan Belore and Jean and James Caddey. Wiskywisky Nancy O notched her ninth career win while moving to within just a few thousand dollars of the $100,000 earnings mark.
The feature victory was part of a natural hat trick for McNair during the second half of the program while Trevor Henry led all drivers with four Wednesday wins.
Four-year-old pacing mare Bestulldotanite also continued to rack up the wins as she notched her fifth in a row for driver Robert Shepherd and trainer William Reda. The homebred daughter of Geartogear, owned by Grand Valley's Jjs Stables, held on by a neck in the 11th race to match her mark of 1:57.2 after a London grand slam.
