Another Preferred For 'Moe'; Nasty Spill
The Raceway at The Western Fair District had a little bit of everything on Monday - an impressive Preferred pace, a number of other Preferred tilts and something that no person wants to a see - a horrible-looking accident.
Paul MacKenzie appeared to get the worst of it in the second race spill, and as a result he came off the remainder of his drives on the 12-race card. MacKenzie was first-over and pressing the pacesetting Golden Era on the way to the three-quarter pole when that foe put in a bad step and made a break. The breaking leader veered into MacKenzie's path and hooked his wheel before a number of trailing horses collided with the tangled leaders. MacKenzie was hit from behind and dumped from his bike.
MacKenzie, who injured his lower back in the accident, is scheduled to meet with a doctor today. Details weren't available about the condition of the other drivers involved in the mishap or the horses involved in the spill, but Trot Insider will post an update when more information is available.
Please join Standardbred Canada in wishing Paul MacKenzie a speedy recovery.
Monday's featured tilt - the $13,200 Preferred - saw Rock On Moe turn in an impressive gate-to-wire score for the tandem of driver Brad Forward and trainer Patrick Shepherd. Sent off as the 2-1 favourite, Rock On Moe shot to the front from Post 3 and led the field through fractions of :26, :55.2 and 1:24.1 before finishing off the competition with a :29.2 closing panel en route to the neck decision in 1:53.3. Camythical was second best, with Mach It Big taking home third prize in the seven-horse affair.
Jonah Moase of Cornwall, PE owns the five-year-old son of Rocknroll Hanover-Armbro Maureen who now boasts a career bankroll of $116,465. The victory was his fourth of the season from just nine trips to the track.
Donegal Gerald captured the $8,400 Preferred-2 for pacers in a time of 1:54.4 for driver Anthony Haughan and trainer Dave Matson - and that was music to the ears of the longshot players. Sent off at odds of 15-1, the nine-year-old son of Rambaran-Shes A Flying rallied for a neck decision over Rollem Up, with Just Crowned settling for third.
Dave Matson trains the veteran for owner John Foran of Newmarket, ON. To date, the classy campaigner has racked up 32 wins and more than $377,000 in career earnings.
In other action, Live And Learn (1:56.4 - J Harris/Gaetan Hebert) and Six Gun (1:55 - dr/tr Jason Ryan) captured their respective $5,600 Preferred-3 assignments.
