Favourites Deliver In WFD Preferreds
Trotting mare Just One Day delivered on her pari-mutuel promise as she returned to the inside post position in the $8,400 Preferred 2 class on Wednesday at Western Fair Raceway.
Just One Day ($4.40), a winner from post one in the Preferred 2 two starts ago on April 1, earned her fourth win in nine starts this year.
Driven by Ryan Holliday, the seven-year-old daughter of Earl retook the lead before the :30 quarter and cruised through middle splits of 1:01.4 and 1:32 over the sloppy track en route to a 2:02.2 two length victory. Second-place finisher Tornado Tim and Daniel O'Brian rallied off cover to edge out pocket-sitter Zorgwijk Jock, driven by four-time Wednesday winner Trevor Henry.
The 32-time career winning mare now boasts over $230,000 in purses for trainer David Holliday and owner-breeder Graham Jackson of Listowel, Ont.
Earlier on the card, favourite Random Holdup ($3.90) converted off a pocket trip to win the $5,600 Preferred 3 for driver Robert Sparling Jr. and trainer Dean Nixon, who also co-owns with Cheri Mulcaster. The five-year-old Here Comes Herbie gelding downed tempo-setter Grogan, driven by Lorne House, to win by two and a quarter lengths in 2:02.2. The victory was also his fourth in nine seasonal starts.
