Bonnys Mac Wins Opening Day Feature
Harness racing returned to Truro Raceway on Sunday afternoon with Bonnys Mac winning the feature pace during the eight-race opening day program.
Bonnys Mac ($4.40) and trainer-driver David Floyd Carey converted from the pocket to win the top class by three-quarters of a length over co-favourite St Lads Dagwood and Ernest Laffin in 2:00. Angelfire and Ben Hollingsworth finished seven lengths behind in third.
Owned and bred by Angus MacInnis of Mabou, N.S., the five-year-old son of Western Paradise was making his first start back in his home province of Nova Scotia since heading to Ontario in 2011. Bonnys Mac has won 14 times in his career while banking over $52,000 in purses.
The victory was the second of two consecutive driving wins for Carey. He also won with Dashwood Darling ($10.20) for trainer Travis Ellis. Last season's leading driver Ryan Ellis doubled up during the opener with back-to-back wins of his own aboard the Henry Smallwood-trained Hushs Funny Girl ($4.80) and Likely To Win ($2.50) for conditioner Wayne Merner. Trainer Emmons Ralph MacKay also had a pair of wins with Prophecy Queen ($42.40) and the Tammy Lynn MacKay-driven As Tuff As Nails ($13.80).
Live racing returns to Truro Raceway next Sunday, April 28.
