Pompano F/M Open To Lucy Lucy
After sweeping three-wide from last place at the top of the stretch, Lucy Lucy ($5.80) and driver Anthony Napolitano won with ease in the $16,000 Mares Open Handicap Pace Tuesday at the Isle Pompano Park.
The fifth race feature saw Biggest Big Bertha and driver Bruce Ranger leave from post four and take early command with Brissonte Hanover (Richard Simard) getting to the two-hole trip in second. Biggest Big Bertha led at the opening quarter mile in :27.1, the half mile in :56.1 and the three-quarters in 1:23.3.
Catalina Morgan, seeking her third straight win for driver Denis St Pierre, came first-over in the backstretch and nearly collared the leader by the final turn. But it was Napolitano and Lucy Lucy who stole the show, looping the field and then pulling away for a four and three-quarter length triumph in 1:52.3. Biggest Big Bertha was second with Hypnotise (Dan Clements) third.
Trained by Kim Sears and owned by Jay Sears of Osteen, it was the fourth win this year for Lucy Lucy, a Florida-sired four-year-old mare by Tough Sir.
For driver Anthony Napolitano, the victory was part of a natural hat trick as he won the third race with Atlantic Filly ($15.20) in 1:54.2 and the fourth race with Eve ($4.40) in 1:56.1. He ended the night with five winners, also capturing the eighth race with Gordy’s Pan ($8.40) in 1:55 and the ninth race with Briley Shea ($8.20) in 1:55.3.
