Windsor Council Supports Track Group

On Monday, March 18, Windsor City Council voted to support the Lakeshore Raceway Group's business plan relating to its push to stabilize and grow the local standardbred horse racing industry.

As an article by the CBC explains, the group's ultimate goal is to secure purse funds from the now-defunct Windsor Raceway in order to eventually get a local raceway built to support local horsemen that have been reeling from the Ontario Liberal's cancellation of the mutually-beneficial slots-at-racetracks program.

Along with Brian Tropea of the Ontario Harness Horse Association, Essex County Warden Tom Bain also spoke on Monday, stating that support for racing and a new track in the area is strong.

The report has quoted group representative Paul Branton as saying "…if the province wants to preserve its industry, but in a smaller form, it only makes sense that you'd go to the best locations."

The article states that the group was scheduled to meet with the OMAFRA horse racing transitional panel today (Tuesday, March 19) in Guelph.
