Annieswesterncard Wins Yonkers Open
Millionaire Annieswesterncard and driver Matt Kakaley rolled from the back of the pack Saturday night, winning Yonkers Raceway's $35,000 Open Handicap Pace.
Content to watch early from post position No. 7, Annieswesterncard saw 13-10 choice Electrofire (Brian Sears) step around Sapphire City (Brent Holland) before a :27.2 opening quarter-mile.
With a :56.3 half came the outer tier, led by Nob Hill High (Eric Goodell). That one pressured toward the 1:24.3 three-quarters, through Electrofire maintained a short lead into the lane. Last week's winner, Tobago Cays (Jim Pantaleano), set it up from second-over, but he was not the problem.
The problem was Annieswesterncard, from third-up, picking everyone off late. He defeated Sapphire City by three-quarters of a length in 1:52.2, matching the fastest local mile of the season. Third went to Nob Hill High, with Electrofire and Electric Oui (Dan Dube) rounding out the payees.
For Annieswesterncard, a seven-year-old Western Hanover gelding owned by trainer Ron Burke (as Burke Racing), Weaver Bruscemi, Panhellenic and M1 Stables, he returned $6.60 (second choice) for his second win in five seasonal starts. The exacta paid $48.80, with the triple returning $296.
