Snowy Sudbury Saturday Night
Platinum and gold are considered precious metals, but the most precious metal at Sudbury Downs on Saturday night was borium – and plenty of it!
The half-mile oval was tested by the wrath of Mother Nature, who prompted the ORC Judges into permitting a four-second allowance for time during the early stages of the card. By the mid-way point of the evening, they made it a seven-second allowance.
Suzys Solitaire captured the co-featured Not Listed Preferred Trot for Pat Barr, who guided the Al Hohner trainee to a 2:06.4 score in the $12,500 tilt.
The seven-year-old son of Feel Like A Winner scored by two lengths over runner-up True High Voltage. It was another two lengths back to Speedy Desperado, who finished third.
Dave Haney of Waterloo and Lawrence Smith of Elmira, ON share ownership on the gelding, who was sent off as a 7-1 outsider. It was his third win of the season and the 26th of his career.
Thomson Seelster got up in the final strides to take home top prize in the $12,500 Not Listed Preferred for pacers. The eight-year-old son of Rustler Hanover eked out the quarter-length victory over Find My Way. Race favourite Gems Greek was third.
Sent off at odds of 11-1, Thomson Seelster stopped the clock in 2:05.1 for trainer/driver Gerry Belanger. Belanger Racing Stables of Barrie, ON have watched the pacer rack up eight wins this season, and that brings his lifetime total to 56.
