Perkins: Legalize Online Gaming
Award-winning Toronto Star columnist Dave Perkins has again let his feelings be known in regard to the topic of legalized online gambling and land-based sports wagering in Canada.
In today's edition, Perkins touches on recent reports by CBS' 60 Minutes and the Washington Post into the world of online poker. Perkins has long been in support of changing the face of sports wagering, both in cyberspace and terra firma.
"Internet gambling operations handling more than $18 billion a year – and growing every month – operate out of the (Kahnawake Mohawk) reserve (south of Montreal) while our government stands by, terrified to intervene and enforce the law," wrote Perkins.
Perkins went on to write, "…the time will never be better than right now to change the law and make Internet gambling – and sports betting, while we're at it – fully legal across the country. We could legalize it, regulate and tax it, the way Britain did in 2004; first year's revenue in the U.K. was more than £1.5 billion."
In the past, the Sovereign Award winner has also trumpeted a full-blown sports book at the new Woodbine Live! expansion expected to be coming to Woodbine Racetrack in the next few years.
