'Brooklyn' Prevails In Miss Onager Final
Red Star Brooklyn overcame a trailing tier start and wore down pacesetter Taj R Us in the final stride to win the $15,000 Miss Onager Claiming Series Final for trainer-driver David McKellar on Sunday at Fraser Downs.
The seven-year-old Island Fantasy mare, who won her first round division for McKellar on Jan. 6, changed ownership each leg of the series, finally ending up back in the McKellar barn for Victoria's Robert Collier. She was claimed by Collier for $6,875 following a third-place effort in the second leg on Jan. 13.
In Sunday's final, Red Star Brooklyn settled away third at the rail while Taj R Us (J.F. Gagne) turned back a pair of early challengers and led the way through panels of :28.1, :58.1 and 1:28.1 over the sloppy track. But Red Star Brooklyn zipped up the passing lane and edged by the leader late to nab the victory in 2:00. Millbanks Piper (Brad Watt) finished one length back in third.
Red Star Brooklyn's 23rd career win pushed her bankroll over the $100,000 mark.
She paid $10.10 to win as the 4-1 third choice.
