DSBF Prelims Contested At Dover
The Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund (DSBF) two-year-old colt and filly pace and trot $20,000 colt trot preliminaries at Dover Downs were contested on Sunday over a track "labeled" sloppy.
Bad Boy Named Sue, Gentlemen Heir and Sgt Charlie won the DSBF paces while Special Command and Bakermill Blake won second leg trot prelims.
Eddie Davis pulled Bad Boy Named Sue off the rail at the top of the stretch and wheeled three-wide down the lane to score a 1:56.1 victory in the only DSBF second leg colt pace prelim.
The Bob Messick and Ron Patton homebred son of Badlands Hanover, trained by Tim Torbert, won for the third time this season. Al Ibad Spider was the early leader and held on for second. Royal Camelot finished third.
Before the wagering program, Gentlemen Heir, a son of Badlands Hanover, won his second straight prelim and fifth race of the campaign, as Ross Wolfenden piloted the colt to a 1:55.4 triumph, one of his three winners, in a $20,000 prelim for Exquisite Farms, Let It Ride and Robert Cooper Stables. Grab The Fortune took second money. Prince Of Badlands was the show horse.
Jeff Bartels' homebred Sgt Charlie, a son of Badlands Hanover, notched his third consecutive victory when track-leading driver Corey Callahan steered between horses for a 1:56 victory. Be Wise Tell Lies was a neck back in second. Travel Watch closed with a rush to secure third place.
In the two $20,000 DSBF frosh trots, Tom Lail-owned and trained Special Command, sired by CR Commando, raced to an early lead and led the rest of a 2:01.4 mile to win his first start in the prelims, a 2:01.4 triumph. Outdoor Acton was second. Collect The Brass, despite several breaks in stride, still finished third.
Bakermill Blake scored a 2:02 success in the other DSBF division with veteran Bob Shahan in the bike. The Linbo colt is owned by Sherrie and Blake Baker and breeder Vicki Givens. It was his second win of the year. Ruby Ransom was second with Hot Potato third.
The top eight point-getting filly trotters and the top eight colt trotters from the prelims will vie for $100,000 DSBF finals next Sunday, December 7. The top eight filly and colt pacers will square off in their respective $100,000 finals on Monday, December 8.
