Quebec-Sired Pacer Wins Yonkers Open
Favourite Electrofire, driven by Brian Sears for trainer Casie Coleman, was the champion of the chalk players Saturday night, winning Yonkers Raceway's $35,000 Open Handicap Pace.
Starting inside his six rivals, Electrofire retook from the six wins-in-a-row Proven Lover (Jason Bartlett), after a foggy, :28-second opening quarter-mile. The reformed claimer then rolled through a :55.4 intermission and 1:23.4 three-quarters, losing his pocket pursuer and any semblance of an outer flow.
Electrofire had a two and a half length lead turning for home and was never threatened. He was two lengths to the good at the wire, which he found in 1:52.3. Second went to Saint William A (Larry Stalbaum), photoing over Here We Go Again (George Brennan). Fitzs Z Tam (Matt Kakaley, seven winners in the first two racing nights) and newly-minted millionaire River Shark (Mark MacDonald) rounded out the payees.
For reformed claimer Electrofire, a six-year-old son of Electric Stena co-owned by Ontario's West Wins Stable and New Jersey's Dave Miller, he returned $4.20 for his first win in a couple of seasonal starts. The exacta paid $46.20, with the triple returning $172.
The Raceway resumes its normal five-night-per-week live schedule next week, with first post every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:10 p.m. Evening simulcasting accompanies all live programs, with afternoon simulcasting available around the NYRA schedule.
