WEG Titles To Moreau, Filion, Jamieson
Richard Moreau had the 2012 training title on the WEG circuit all wrapped up coming into Monday’s matinee program at Woodbine Racetrack, but Jody Jamieson and Sylvain Filion found themselves fighting right to the finish on the final day of the season in their quest to capture the driving title.
Filion, who entered the card three wins behind Jamieson, quickly tied Jamieson after sweeping the Daily Double with Instant Thrill (1:52.3) and Faithful One (1:54.2) and then capturing Race 6 with Perfect Vacation. Jamieson clicked in Race 8 with the Joe Pereira-trained Rocinante (1:53.3) to edge Filion again by one win, forcing a showdown in the seasonal finale.
In Race 11, Filion sat pocket with Gareth Nourrir behind Jamieson and Long Fight Hanover until right-lining in the stretch and powering past the pacesetter to win in 1:53.1, creating a tie between Jamieson and Filion with 284 wins each on the Woodbine-Mohawk circuit.
It was the second consecutive WEG title for last year’s O’Brien Award-winning reinsman. Jamieson finished his year with 332 wins and purse earnings in excess of $9.1 million. Filion, who celebrated his first driving title on the WEG circuit, racked up 434 wins this season and hauled in purse earnings in excess of $8.6 million - a career best for the Quebec native.
The 2012 training title went to Richard Moreau, who enjoyed a four-win performance during Monday’s matinee program at Woodbine Racetrack. The solid day at the office helped the Quebec native pushed his WEG win total to 132 for the 2012 season.
Moreau, who is an O’Brien Award finalist for Canada’s Trainer of the Year, has enjoyed a career-best season for wins (341) and earnings (in excess of $3.6 million). He’s still got some work to do before the end of the season, however, with a pair of horses entered for this evening’s card at Georgian Downs.
