Fourteen-Year-Old Goes Out A Winner
Facing retirement when the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve, 14-year-old Lombo Skyrider A made the most of his final spin around the racetrack on Sunday evening at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Trainer Rene Allard sent his beloved pacer postward for the final time in its career on Sunday evening and the fan favourite didn't disappoint with a 1:59.2 score in the third race for $6,500 claimers. In rein to Allard's brother Simon, the son of Panorama tasted victory one last time as he pulled the pocket in the stretch and edged by pacesetter Hippity Hop N to notch his 63rd career win. Run Must Run Am came on for third.
Current owner Allard acquired the brown gelding in the summer of 2011 and claimed him back after loosing him at the end of the year. Lombo Skyrider A has won six races in 29 starts this year while banking close to $25,000. His lifetime bankroll now stands at $752,472.
Lombo Skyrider A's win was part of a training triple for Rideau's leading conditioner. Seven-year-old trotter Merited Victory and four-year-old pacing mare Whatrugonnado also scored Sunday wins for Allard.
