Dreamfair Eternal Retired
After a career that spanned seven years, winning 56 races, every stakes event on the older pacing mare schedule and more than $2.5 million, Trot Insider has learned that 2010 Horse of the Year and one of the best pacing mares in Canadian harness racing history, Dreamfair Eternal has been retired.
John Lamers, who bred, raised and owned the daughter of Camluck-J Cs Nathalie, made the call to bring Dreamfair Eternal back home to her birthplace in Ingersoll, Ont. after Saturday night's Breeders Crown final. Lamers noted that the mare put in steps around the first turn and came back to the padock with a swollen ankle.
"She wasn't really interested and Pat said the same thing," said Lamers. "I decided on the way home, she's had enough and I always said that when she showed me she was done, we'd quit with her."
At the age of six, Dreamfair Eternal became just the third older pacing mare to be named as the O'Brien Award winner for Canada's Horse of the Year. The 2010 season was an incredible one for the daughter of Camluck who won 16 of 22 starts and over $942,000 in purses. She racked up wins in the final of the Masters Series, an elimination of the Roses Are Red Stakes, elimination and final of the Milton Stakes, the elimination and final of the Forest City Pace, and her division of the prestigious Breeders Crown. That race sticks out in Lamers' mind as his personal favourite.
Dreamfair Eternal retires as the sixth richest pacing mare in harness racing history. Since 2003, when the Golden Girls made its debut on the schedule, the Patrick Fletcher-trained Dreamfair Eternal is the only mare to ever win the Golden Girls, Lady Liberty and Roses Are Red in the same year - a trick she turned in 2011.
While Randy Waples once made the statement that "if I wasn’t married and she wasn’t a horse, I’d marry her," Lamers reports that a different stud will report for duty as Dreamfair Eternal will be bred in 2013 to Somebeachsomewhere.
"She's given me more than I could have ever hoped for, " stated Lamers ."We're really looking forward to having one of her little ones running around here and right now Somebeachsomewhere is setting the bar a notch higher than any other stallion."
Dreamfair Eternal first
Dreamfair Eternal first turned my head in one of her early conditioned races when she had the 10-hole with Mike Whelan driving and she swooped the field from last at Woodbine without Mike even lifting a line. I knew right then she was different; special, and I wasn't wrong. Happy farewell to one of my favorite mares ever.

What a joy Dreamfair Eternal
What a joy Dreamfair Eternal and Randy Waples have been to watch on the track. All the best to her in her new career as a mum. She is well deserving of the services of Somebeachsomewhere. What a match this could be! Let's hope there will be tracks in Ontario for her future babies to race on.
