Harrington Drivers Injured In Accident
An accident-marred seventh race Wednesday at Harrington Raceway initiated a “No Contest” ruling by the judges and left drivers George Dennis and Brad Hanners recovering with injuries.
While their injuries are not believed to be severe at the time of this writing, both drivers are being held overnight at Milford Memorial Hospital in nearby Milford, Delaware awaiting testing and x-ray results.
As is customary in the event of a “No Contest” ruling, all money wagered on the race was refunded.
The mishap was caused when the No. 1 horse Ima Prince Too broke stride while clearing the first turn on the lead and caused a chain reaction behind him among trailing horses. Hanners and Dennis were forced off their mounts and only one horse finished the race as the remaining five horses were pulled up. None of the horses involved appeared to sustain injuries.
Both Hanners and Dennis were able to get up under their own power.
In the featured $22,000 Open Trot, Nick Callahan, Shaun Callahan, and C.A. Bonucellil’s Mandabra ($19.40, Frank Milby) was an upset winner over favourite Man About Town in 1:57.1. Trained by Nick Callahan, Mandabra sat a pocket trip behind the favourite and surged by in the stretch.
Harrington’s leading driver Ross Wolfenden, won five races on the program.
