Gendron Takes First 3R Driving Title
It went down to the final race of the final card of the season on Tuesday night, but Jocelyn Gendron emerged with the first drivers' title at Hippodrome 3R.
Simon Allard had entered the night on top of the standings with 10 victories, but could do no better than two seconds and a third in his first six drives on the card.
Gendron, for his part, notched three wins to take the overall lead with 11. He took the fourth race with Making Money ($6.10), the seventh with 13-year-old warhorse Canbec Mustang ($4.20) and the ninth with G Zattara ($5.10).
Both had live horses in the 11th and final race, with Gendron behind the heavy favourite, Surf New York. But a break at the start took him out of contention, and Allard had his shot to pull even with third choice Charlottes Tazman. He sat off quick early fractions, advanced around the far turn and had his sights squarely set on the leader, second choice Zeph Lyon, but could not get by, losing by a neck.
