Faves Deliver In Nova Scotia Stakes; Two Horses Involved In Spill
Isleofpalms and Pictonian Amanda enjoyed solid paydays at Truro Raceway on Sunday afternoon thanks to their respective scores in the Nova Scotia Stakes for three-year-old pacing fillies.
Todd Trites and Isleofpalms drew first blood by taking home the lion’s share of the $9,400 purse in the first division. The daughter of Force Of Life-In Front battled with Oduya to the quarter pole in :27.4 before settling for the pocket spot on the way to the half. Oduya hit the half in :57.2 before coming under siege from Isleofpalms on the way to the three-quarter station. The fillies marched past that marker in 1:28.1 before Isleofpalms drew clear to win by a pair of lengths in 2:00.1 over a late-closing Seeyouonthebeach. Oduya wound up fading to finish third.
Sent off as the 7-5 favourite in the seven-filly affair, Isleofpalms bettered her 2012 record to 3-1-2 from 12 tries for trainer Cyril MacDonald. The homebred, who is owned by Wesley Patriquin of Debert and Paul Merlin of Wentworth, NS, is now a five-time winner to date and a career winner of purses exceeding $21,000.
It was John ‘The Hitman’ Holmes coming through in the second division with Pictonian Amanda, who front-stepped her way to a 1:59 decision in the $9,700 tilt. Holmes had the daughter of Western Paradise-Southview Sasha parked at the quarter pole in :28, but she led the field through middle panels of :58.3 and 1:29 before using a :30-second closing quarter to hold on for the win by three-quarters of a length over Blackriver Nannie. Putnams Glory closed from well back to finish third.
Daniel Ross of Belfast and Bill Bell of Belle River, PE share ownership on the 10-time winner who hangs her harness bag in the barn of trainer Wade Sorrie. After going 5-for-10 in her freshman season the career winner of $55,219 has followed up with a 5-0-3 record from just nine trips to the track this season.
A two-horse spill occurred in the ninth race involving M M Lass (Ryan Ellis) and Access Key (Emmons Mackay). Both pacers fell in the back-half of the mile as a result of interference caused by Phightenphilly (Clayton Stevens), who finished third before being disqualified and placed sixth for the interference infraction.
Trot Insider will post details on the condition of the horses and drivers involved in the accident when they are made available.
