A Day Of Doubles At West Meadows
Trainer-driver Robert Stewart opened the 2012 West Meadows Raceway meet on Sunday afternoon with a pair of winners, including a new track record holder.
Springheel Al ($6.10) went wire-to-wire to win the first race in 2:04 for Stewart before even-money favourite Springheelbraddock ($4) romped to a six and three-quarter length victory in a new 2:00.4 track record for aged stallions.
Red Star Egyptian ($5.10), driven by Donald Howlett, completed a training double for Tyler Redwood to close out the card with a 1:59.2 effort in the featured $2,000 SSBOA Pace for four and five-year-olds. He was just one-fifth of a second off older gelding Sophio Hanover's overall track record. Redwood also won with Red Star Best ($2.90) one race prior.
Driver Kirk Rogers and conditioner James Jeffers combined to win a pair of races during the middle portion of the 10-race card, including the biggest upset of the day with 25-1 shocker Just A Mark ($52), while reinsman Philip Giesbrecht also doubled up with teamsters Ashleigh and Jodie Cullen.
Live racing continues at Canada's newest racetrack every Sunday afternoon until October 7.
