Trotters Battle For Top ATSS Spots

Trotters faced off for the final time this season in Atlantic Sires Stakes action before the championships during a rescheduled card of harness racing Friday night at Inverness Raceway with sophomore Sweetwater Rukkus and freshman Irish Lullaby securing their spots atop the standings

Sweetwater Rukkus, driven by Jack Panting, sat third for most the mile in his $6,800 division before kicking home to win by four lengths in 2:04 for trainer-driver Ralph Annear. B J Carmalyta finished second off a pocket trip and pacesetter Dusty Red Lane was third. The Bo W gelding has won three of his five ATSS starts this year. He entered the final round tied for first place with Dusty Red Lane, but claimed the leading role all to himself with his career-best victory.

My Daisy Duke, ranked second in the sophomore divisional standings, trails Sweetwater Rukkus by just one point after her wire-to-wire 2:05.3 score in Friday's action. Corey MacPherson drove the Northern Bailey filly to her third ATSS win for trainer Paul MacDonald and owner-breeder Jonathan MacDonald. Lil Miss Abbie and Est Non Ila Dulcis rounded out the top three finishers.

Irish Lullaby front-stepped her way to a 2:07.4 triumph in the first $7,120 freshman division over I Aint No Lady with Crestwave Morning a distant third after recovering from an early miscue. The Northern Bailey filly, now three-for-five in ATSS, is trained and driven by Daniel MacDonald for Boyd Macdonald Prodce Ltd. and Daniel Ross. Irish Lullaby, who was tied in first place with Im Graceful entering Friday's preliminary round, also claimed sole ownership of the top spot with the win.

West River Xcel romped to an 11-1/4 length victory in 2:09.2 in the other freshman division earning him the number two spot and his second win in five ATSS outings. Clare MacDonald trains the Northern Bailey filly for owner-breeder West River Stock Farm. Windemere Norma and Dusty Lane Nick finished second and third.
