Last Call For Adult Harness Racing Camp

Grand River Raceway is issuing a last call for registrations for its upcoming Standardbred Xtreme Adult Harness Racing Camp.

The camp runs September 8 & 9, and the evening of September 10. Co-hosted by the Hands On Horses Program, the camp gives participants a unique, in-depth look inside the world of harness racing. The camp includes a variety on hands-on activities (including grooming and jogging) and classroom sessions with industry professionals and officials.

Past participants in the camp include current, new and potential Standardbred owners, along with some general horse enthusiasts.

Each day, camp participants will spend two to three hours learning about the basics of grooming, harnessing and jogging. Four retired Standardbred racehorses from the Youth Camp program provide the horsepower.

Classroom topics include anatomy, basic care, horse health check, nutrition, horsemanship, stable management, conditioning, taxes and financials, fractional ownership and veterinary care.

The camp includes a field trip to a breeding farm and an optional outing to Mohawk Racetrack for dinner on the evening of September 8.

The Standardbred Xtreme Adult Camp will culminate on Monday, September 10 at Grand River Raceway when participants make their racing debuts. Accompanied by professional drivers in double-seated jog carts, the camp participants will put their training to work as they compete in a pair of special half-mile exhibition races staged during the regular race broadcast.

The inclusive cost for the camp is $300 and is limited to eight participants.

To register, contact Jennifer Unger at (519) 846-5455 ext. 222 or [email protected].
