Onward Finesse Upsets In NS Stake
There wasn’t much pari-mutuel love given to Onward Finesse in Sunday’s $14,060 Nova Scotia Stake for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings at Inverness Raceway, but that didn’t stop the gelding from registering a 10-1 upset in the featured tilt.
Driver Mike Stevenson wasted no time securing the lead from Post 2 with Onward Finesse, who laid down fractions of :28.2, :57 and 1:27.4 before plodding home in a :32-second clip en route to the half-length decision over race favourite Paradise Station in 1:59.4. Putnams New Year rounded out the top three finishers in the rich contest.
Wade Sorrie trains the son of Western Paradise-On Patrol Finesse for Boyd Macdonald Prodce Ltd of Crapaud and Daniel Ross of Belfast, PE. The victory was the fifth of the season in 12 tries – the fifth to date – for the career winner of $14,130.
Truth Or Dare used the same tactical approach to secure a win in the $2,500 Winners Over Pace for the tandem of co-owner/trainer Walter Walker and driver Ryan Campbell.
The eight-year-old Camluck-Virginia Dare gelding shot to the top and laid down splits of :29.2, :59.1 and 1:29.2 before hustling home in :28.4 to win by 3-1/2 lengths over Romanie Ranger in 1:58.1. Silver Dragon took home the show dough.
Walker shares ownership on the pacer with Kayla Anne Habicht of Inverness, NS, and together they watched the 43-time winner improve this year’s record to 6-3-2 from 14 starts with the win. He’s less than $2,000 away from surpassing $100,000 in lifetime earnings.
