Grogan Trots To Another Record Win
Eight-year-old trotter Grogan continued his current hot streak on Saturday night with another track record performance.
The Lorne House trainee matched the 1:58.3 Dresden Raceway aged trotting record on August 12 and equalled that clocking with a win in a Preferred event at Woodstock Raceway last weekend. In his latest outing on Saturday night at Hiawatha Horse Park, Grogan lowered Twin B Rawley's track record for trotting stallions by one-fifth of a second to 1:56 flat. The mile time was just four-fifths of a second off the overall aged trotting record, held by geldings Abbey Road C and Bankable.
With House in the sulky, Grogan ($11.70) set up shop on the front end in the co-featured $7,000 Preferred 3 Trot after a post six start and cruised past panels of :27.2, :57.3, and 1:26.3 en route to his 31st career win and fastest yet. Breeder Emerson Gill of Grand Bend, Ont. owns the son of Angus Hall with Graeme Harvey of Ingersoll, Ont.
CIS Buckeye finished three and a half lengths behind in second for driver Terry Kerr while Stolen Goods and Dave Wall rounded out the top three finishers.
The matching Preferred 3 Pace was won by favourite Lucky Terror ($4) and four-time Saturday night winning driver Nick Steward. The five-year-old Western Terror gelding, trained by Shaun McDonald and owned by Glenview Livestock Ltd. of Wallenstein, Ont., advanced from fourth to first after the :27.1 opening quarter mark and cruised past splits of :55 and 1:22.3 en route to the two and a quarter length season's-best triumph in 1:52.3. Royal Sir and Mark Williams followed for second and Oogie Two, with Alfie Carroll aboard, closed well for third.
