Grogan Matches Dresden Trot Record
Eight-year-old trotter Grogan turned in a track record performance at Dresden Raceway on Sunday afternoon as he spun around the half-mile oval in 1:58.3 with trainer Lorne House in tow.
Grogan left from post two in the fourth race and carved out fractions of :28, :57.1 and 1:27.4 en route to the 1:58.3 victory, matching Twin B Excalibur's aged trotting record.
Grogan paid $8.50 to win as the 3-1 second favourite. Third choice Rainbow Gold (Dennis Duford) finished six lengths behind in second and the popular Fashion Fun (Kevin Wallis) followed in third.
The son of Angus Hall out of Magnetic Moment is owned by breeder Emerson Gill of Grand Bend, Ont. and Graeme Harvey of Ingersoll, Ont. He notched his second win in nine starts this year and 29th lifetime, pushing his bankroll over the $200,000 mark.
Sunday's featured $6,800 Preferred Handicap Pace went to the popular Artashack and Mark Williams in 1:57.3. The five-year-old gelding left from post six and cruised past panels of :29.2, 1:00.2 and 1:29.4 before opening up three lengths on his foes. Trainer Lenore Prince co-owns and bred the son of Artesian and Sugar Shack Sheela, a career winner of more than $90,000, with Eric Prince of North Buxton, Ont.
Artashack paid $5.70 to win for the second time in 19 seasonal starts and 16th time in his career. Bo Flex (Nick Steward) and Lumberjack Willie (Gene Piroski) finished second and third, respectively.
