St. John's Racing Honours Fleming
Three-year-old pacing colt Pondside Thunder captured the featured Preferred Handicap Pace to wrap up Gord Fleming Memorial Day at St. John's Racing & Entertainment Centre Sunday.
The family of Gord Fleming, one of the top trainers and drivers in the province who passed away last year, presented coolers and trophies to the winners of each race on Sunday's card. Proceeds from the day will go towards the Organ Donor Program.
The Preferred class went to trainer-driver Bill Taylor and Pondside Thunder, who survived a first over journey to prevail by half a length ahead of last week's winner Major Venue and Shane Forward in 2:02.2. The pacesetting 17-1 longshot U S Charmeleon and Scott MacRoberts finished one length behind in third.
The mile time was new track record for three-year-old geldings.
Pondside Thunder earned his first win in four seasonal starts for owner Clifford Garland, who Fleming had driven many horses for in his career.
