'Malek' Wins Kelti Burnett Memorial

Fredericton native Bo Sowers harnessed the winner of this year's edition of the Kelti Burnett Memorial. Malek Hanover scored a decisive triumph in the feature race for the local trainer during Old Home Week harness racing action at Connell Park in Woodstock.

Mike Stevenson guided the eight-year-old veteran to his 36th career win. Malek Hanover, owned by Ledgehill Farm Ltd. of Arnprior, Ont., cleared to the front with a rush at the three-quarter pole and went on to win by nine open lengths in 1:56 over a track listed one second off. Carnivore finished second and Joseph Michael was third.

Stevenson swept the late double, scoring earlier with Dance Hanover in 2:01.2.

Three other drivers earned a pair of victories on the nine-dash card. Gilles Barrieau clicked with Classic John in 2:01 and Chilled Wine in 2:01.1. Wayne Watson was in the bike with MD Hardlys Success in 1:59.1 and Keystone Hot Pants in 2:04.4. And John MacDonald earned victories with Hustler Hall in 2:02.3 and Eyes Of Glory in 2:03.3.

Racing action resumes Monday afternoon with a 12-dash card at Fredericton Raceway. Post time is 1 p.m.
