St. John's Celebrates 50th Anniversary

A 50th anniversary celebration of harness racing in Newfoundland took place at the St. John's Racing and Entertainment Centre on Sunday, and track officials told Trot Insider it was a beautiful afternoon and there was an excellent turnout for the festivities.

To start the day there was a tour of the barn area for Minister Keith Hutchings and Mayor Doc O'Keefe. Those dignitaries were transported to the winner’s circle on a double-seated jog cart. Track owner Jim Whelan and manager of the SCREC, Brett Whelan, were joined by Councilor John Dinn from Goulds. They addressed the crowd about the beautiful track and the history it holds, and followed up with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the special occasion. There was a cake cutting ceremony inside the building.

Families in attendance were treated to face painting, a bouncy castle, snacks and a BBQ - all free of charge. Many horsemen and horsewomen set up displays showcasing the 50 years of history that their families have been involved with.

The displays included various photos, plaques, trophies, silks, helmets and old programs. It was truly a day to remember with all the memories laid out for everyone to view and reflect on.

Woodmere Blackrose won the feature race on the program, and a cooler presentation was made to the connections following the victory.

The president of the Newfoundland Harness Owners Association, Keith Gowan, and all the people who helped bring this day together were fantastic. So many people helped out and showcased the day as a truly special event. With so many old and new faces around, the day was a huge success.

Current track announcer Jim Hare handed over the microphone to two special announcers, Bill Driscoll and Jim Flynn, who called many races back in their day.

There was also the Standardbred Canada Award given out to Herb Pack for being the longest active member. Pack is still a current owner at the track.
