Smedshammer Lands Unbeaten 3YO
While the 2012 Hambletonian landscape appears to be dominated by filly Check Me Out and a quartet of stars from the Jimmy Takter barn, trainer Trond Smedshammer has landed an undefeated sophomore in the quest for his second Hambo trophy.
According to harnessracing.com Norwegian shipping executive Torkel Alendal purchased trotting colt Riccolo, a son of Northern Kid out of the Valley Victor mare Touch Of Victory, from breeders Walter and Paige Paisley for a six-figure price. In 2012, Riccolo is eight-for-eight in Illinois and won his most recent test in a lifetime best 1:54.2.
"He got here Monday and I just jogged him Wednesday for the first time. He's a nice looking horse, and of course, you can't tell much from just jogging one," said Smedhammer.
Not only will Riccolo have a new trainer for his next start, Swedish driving ace Bjorn Goop has reportedly been contacted to drive the colt in the Hambletonian.
