Hiawatha Invaders Win Preferreds
Lumberjack Willie closed well from the backfield to edge out slight favourite Artashack in the co-featured $7,000 Preferred 3 Pace at Hiawatha Horse Park on Saturday night.
The five-year-old Lumber Hanover gelding, trained by Todd Kennedy, closed out the card with a 1:55 score by half a length, giving driver Gene Piroski a grand slam. Natural Habitat finished third.
Rosemary Young owns Lumberjack Willie, a first-time winner at the Sarnia oval and eight-time winner over the course of his career.
CIS Buckeye, driven by Robert Sparling Jr., also earned his first victory at Hiawatha Horse Park when he advanced from mid-pack to win the $7,000 Preferred 3 Trot in 1:57.3 by half a length over Solo Victory. Latte Cafe rounded out the top three finishers.
Keith Cullen trains the four-year-old gelded son of Ilooklikemymom, who has won 13 races lifetime, for owner James Morency of Windsor, Ont.
Both Preferred winners were making their second starts at the Sarnia five-eighths mile oval.
