Portuguese Govt Realizes Importance Of Horse Racing

Recognizing the importance of the horse-racing industry in regard to tourism, rural development, the sporting landscape and economic potential, a government-created work group in Portugal has come to the determination that the legalization of horse-racing wagering is a "priority action" for the ruling administration.

According to a report by theportugalnews.com, Portugal State Secretary for Forestry and Rural Development Daniel Campelo has stated that the necessary steps in order to bring legalized horse-racing wagering to the people have been taken.

"We think it is a priority action and we already have the document prepared," Campelo was quoted as saying in the report.

Campelo went on to state that the legalization of horse-racing wagering would bolster the industry and would "be good for sports, but particularly good for rural development," in addition to stressing the economic potential within the horse world.

Campelo went on to say, "that realm has, in Portugal, a very important part to be explored. Within Europe, equestrian tourism has a bearing that is greater than golf."
