Lexis D J Wins Grand River Preferred
Lexis D J kept up his consistent trotting record of top finishes amongst the Preferred ranks with a season's best 1:57.3 effort in the $11,000 feature race at Grand River Raceway on Wednesday evening.
With the inside post advantage, Kashas Kid and Trevor Henry established the lead off the gate and carved out fractions of :29.1, :59.4, and 1:29.1 while Lexis D J and Ross Battin advanced first up from third. The Shane Arsenault trainee wore down the tempo-setter as they moved into the stretch and drew off for the three and three-quarter length victory. Longshot Margarita Man and Robert Jenkins Jr. came in second while Were Rolling and Paul MacKenzie completed the top three finishers.
The 3-1 second choice paid $8.40 to win for the 20th time in his career. The five-year-old Amigo Hall gelding, who was also a winner of an Invitational Trot at Western Fair Raceway last time out, has hit the board in 11 of his 16 seasonal starts (five wins) while earning over $56,000 for Ontario owners Louis Arsenault of Freelton and Brandon Arsenault of Waterdown. Lifetime, he has banked in excess of $250,000.
Michelles Idea, the Top Conditioned Mare of 2011 at Grand River Raceway, circled a field of Preferred 3 pacing mares to notch her fifth win of the season in 17 starts for driver J.R. Plante and trainer Ian Reid, who also co-owns with Ian Reid Sr. and James Smith of Guelph. The 1:56.3 quarter length win in the $10,500 event over popular pacesetter Racy Gal Hanover and Mario Baillargeon was her 28th lifetime and bumped her bankroll to nearly $299,000. The seven-year-old Western Hanover mare paid $61.20 to win for the 29-1 surprise.
