Chow For Now Swiftest In Harvest Series
Chow For Now impressed with a 1:50.4 effort in the fastest division of the Harvest Series first leg for Ontario-sired or -bred sophomore males on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Making his first start for Team Cullen in the first $25,000 pacing split, the Big Jim-Northern Athena gelding settled for a pocket trip behind pacesetting Cheese Dreams (Jody Jamieson) through :26.4, :55.2 and 1:23.1 fractions. Travis Cullen angled him away from the pylons entering the stretch as D A Bodacious required straightening from Jamieson, and Chow For Now surged home with the field’s fastest final panel of :27.2 to win by two lengths. Cheese Dreams was second with Liquid (Mark MacDonald) finishing evenly for third.
Chow For Now, owned by A1stable of Dundas, Ont. and Robert Frank of Waterloo, Ont., improved on place finishes in his two previous starts in his first appearance from the Jodie Cullen stable. The gelding tallied his third seasonal win in 14 outings after a winless six-start rookie season and raised his career earnings to $53,690. He returned $8.70 to win.
Stormont Fast Boy ($2.20), third in the October Harvest Series final, also scored for new connections as he took the faster $25,000 trotting contest. The Muscle Mass-Countess Stormont gelding was the final leader of a backstretch shuffle and strode clear by 3-1/2 lengths down the lane for a 1:54 score for driver James MacDonald, trainer Dave Menary and owner Pollack Racing LLC. Acquired after his previous start on Oct. 25, the gelding improved to four-for-10 lifetime. Crunchintheodds (Jody Jamieson) was second over In The Black (J Harris).
MacDonald also drove the other trot winner, with Pete Green ($17) closing coolly from third down the stretch for a 1:55.2 victory. Doug Hie trains the Green Manalishi S-Meadowbranch Vicki colt and shares ownership with Bryn Campbell of Port Hope, Ont. Pete Green moved to three-for-12 lifetime with the career-best effort. Stormont Friedboy (Bob McClure) finished gamely for second, with Stonebridge Mac (Travis Cullen) closing for third.
Evans Legacy left from post seven, was relegated to third in a backstretch shuffle, then came on again in the stretch to capture the other pacing contest. Travis Henry got the son of Cattlewash-Tables Big Secret up by three-quarters of a length to improve to five-for-29 lifetime with a 1:52 clocking for trainer Lyle MacArthur and owners Linda Wellwood of St. George, Ont. and Tammy Aspden of Caistor Centre, Ont. Plankton Hanover (James MacDonald) pushed for second, followed by a gaining Docs Moreau (Bob McClure).
The Harvest Series is for non-winners of $60,000 lifetime or $30,000 this year as of Sept. 30, with an also-eligible condition of a $30,000 claiming tag.
All three starters for trainer Don Lindsey reached the winner’s circle during the 13-race program to give the Fergus, Ont. conditioner a triple. He won the opener with Poseidon Seelster ($4.10) as that gelding scored for the first time since May in 1:49.2. Wallace Hartley then won the fourth race for the trainer in 1:52.4, and Barracuda Hanover ($3.80) took the 11th in 1:51.4 to complete the trio. Bob McClure drove all three winners. Lindsey improved his 2026 tally to 13-for-110.
