Alberta Champions Crowned In Super Finals At Century Mile
The Alberta Sires Stakes (ABSS) Super Finals produced four impressive winning performances as two-and three-year-old pacers contested the $90,000 championship events over a sloppy track on Saturday, Oct. 31 at Century Mile.
Phil Giesbrecht drove both two-year-old winners and had a combined margin of victory of 12-1/2 lengths as filly Captain Tahiti cut the mile and colt Somewhat Tipsy sprinted away off an uncovered advance.
Captain Tahiti bottomed out the field in the rookie distaff dash for back-to-back ABSS wins in 1:56.3. Outlaw Risk N Hope (Logan Gillis) hustled past inside starter Captain Tahiti into the first turn, but Giesbrecht sent his filly out and to the top before the quarter in :28.2. After taking a two-length lead to the half in :56.4, she dashed five lengths clear to three-quarters in 1:26.2 and ran up the score to seven lengths while equalling her career mark. Miss Melanie (David Kelly) rallied off cover for second, with Blue Star Shania (Mike Hennessy) third.
Captain Tahiti took wins in divisions of the Emerald Filly Pace and ABSS Alberta Stardust prior to Saturday’s triumph, which upped her record to four-for-seven and her bankroll to $77,040. Chris Lancaster trains the daughter of Captain Deo-Tahiti Seelster and co-owns her with Doug Bowers of Brandon, Man. The winner returned $3.10.
Somewhat Tipsy was the only non-favourite of the four to score in the Super Finals as the rookie colt replicated his 5-1/2-length winning margin from the final preliminary ABSS leg.
The son of Vertical Horizon-Mrs Suhwiggins settled in fourth and let Scouts Command (Doug McNair) dictate the fractions of :29.3 and :58.3. Giesbrecht gave Somewhat Tipsy his cue at the top of the last bend and rushed the colt alongside Scouts Command, edging ahead at three-quarters in 1:27.2. The former leader hung in there until the eighth pole, when Somewhat Tipsy blew the race open and motored to victory in 1:55.1. Dungannigans (Nathan Sobey) was second-best, followed by favourite Y V Michters (David Kelly).
Somewhat Tipsy has won three straight ABSS starts for trainer-driver Giesbrecht, taking two prelims prior to Saturday’s victory that launched his earnings to $68,959. He is now three-for-eight for owners J J J Stables of North Vancouver, B.C. and 4WRacing of Surrey, B.C. The win price was $7.20.
Lets Go Gals was responsible for the biggest blowout of the night as she captured the sophomore filly pace Super Final by 11 lengths. Blake Piwniuk orchestrated the gate-to-wire romp, putting the filly in front through :28.2 and :57 fractions before dropping the hammer with a :27.4 third panel to reach three-quarters on a three-length lead in 1:24.4. Lets Go Gals unleashed another :28.3 section coming home, with Piwniuk celebrating across the line while his charge stopped the clock in 1:53.2. Blue Star Strike (Drew Campbell) closed from sixth down the lane for place, with Mystery Shooter (Nathan Sobey) third.
Lets Go Gals improved on her ABSS Super Final consolation victory last year, upping her career earnings to $123,349 with her fifth career tally in 31 starts on Saturday. Rebecca Kanak trains the daughter of Captain Deo-Twin B Breezeway, now four-for-21 this season, for Trevor Williams of Winnipeg, Man., Aurel Vodon of Virden, Man. and Morning Line Inc. of Airdrie, Alta. The winner paid out $4.80.
Jamie Gray’s trainees swept the triactor in the final for three-year-old colts and geldings, with the Doug McNair-driven Boleto A Mexico leading the trio to the wire. McNair blasted the Captive Audience-Legs Like Tina colt from post five to the lead and rattled off fractions of :28.1, :56.4 and 1:25.2 with Gray’s Ruler Of Dragons (Phil Giesbrecht) first-over and in pursuit around the last turn. A game Ruler Of Dragons closed late on the wrapped-up Boleto A Mexico, but the leader prevailed by a measured three-quarters of a length in 1:54.4. Mayhem N Madness, driven by Gray, slid out from a tight spot in fifth turning for home and closed for third.
Boleto A Mexico, also a consolation winner in 2025, nabbed his third straight win for owners Gray of Sturgeon County, Alta., Max Gibb of Millarville, Alta., 5 Amigos of Sturgeon County and Aaron Malkin of Calgary, Alta. He has won five of 14 seasonal starts and is seven-for-19 lifetime with $132,330 earned. He returned $2.70 at the mutuels.
In the undercard feature, Ernesto Delacruz snapped the latest winning streak of Shark Week with a sharp stretch effort to take the $15,500 Preferred Handicap Pace. Jean-Francois Gagne had Ernesto Delacruz positioned third as Shark Week (Mike Hennessy) put up the :27.2 and :55.4 early fractions, then tipped his trainee out to push uncovered to three-quarters in 1:24. Ernesto Delacruz rolled level with Shark Week in mid-stretch, and the track-record holder dug in, but the challenger finished him off in the last 1/16th of a mile to win by a quarter-length in 1:52.2. Telluride Hanover (Terry Kaufman) was third.
The winning seven-year-old son of Vertical Horizon-Camifasolasi Do has now won back-to-back Preferreds and is three-for-12 on the season for Gagne, of Wetaskiwin, Alta., who owns and trains him. Ernesto Delacruz tallied his 19th career win and grew his bankroll to $341,808 in his 61st start. He paid $14 to win.
