Favoured Freshman Colts Deliver In Harvest Series Finals

D A Volusia winning at Woodbine Mohawk Park

Favourites D A Volusia and Luv Lou were victorious in the $60,000 finals of the Harvest Series for Ontario-sired or bred freshman colts at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Friday, Oct. 30.

The three-week series was for non-winners of $30,000 in 2026 as of Sept. 30.

Driver Jody Jamieson's D A Volusia, who was bet down as the 9-5 favourite over the preliminary leg winners Erinwood Triton and Floriet, scored a maiden-breaking 1:54.1 victory in the final for two-year-old trotting colts.

A four-time Friday night winner, Jamieson made his move from fourth with D A Volusia into the final turn and took a brief two-hole tuck behind the pacesetting Erinwood Triton (:28.2, :57.3, 1:26.1) before sprinting off in a :27.4 final frame to score by 4-3/4 lengths. Rally Kalle and Scott Young came on for second over Erinwood Triton, driven by Travis Henry.

After hitting the board in both preliminary legs, D A Volusia exits the series a winner with a bankroll now totalling $46,950 from six career starts. Jamieson's father Carl trains and co-owns the Muscle Mass-Cape Coral colt with 1140545 Ontario Ltd. of Guelph, Ont., and David Lemon of London, Ont.

D A Volusia returned $5.60 to win.

Luv Lou split rivals in the stretch after a two-hole trip to take the series final for two-year-old pacing colts as the 8-5 favourite in a career-best 1:52.1 clocking for driver Trevor Henry and trainer Lacey McCabe.

A runner-up in round two of the series, Luv Lou tracked last week's upsetter Pownalbay Jimbob, who had crossed in front from the outside post eight for Travis Cullen and carved out fractions of :26.1, :55.2 and 1:24. As Got The Moves and Mark MacDonald swept up from third in the final turn and raced past the tiring leader into the stretch, Henry maneuvered Luv Lou between the top pair and zipped up the pylons late to score by 1-1/4 lengths. Aussie Pharoah, with Doug McNair in the bike, sprinted off cover to get up for second over Got The Moves.

A homebred for Ontario owners Glenview Livestock of Wallenstein and Cheryl Cherry of Guelph, the Sweet Lou-Tarryn A Strip colt has now won half of his six career starts while banking $56,350.

Luv Lou's win payout was $5.30.

In other action, trainer Jacques Dupont sent out the top two distaffers in the $44,000 Fillies & Mares Open Pace, with Ultimate Desbi N prevailing from the pocket to equal her lifetime mark of 1:49.2 while her favoured stablemate Lets N Joy N, a seven-time Open winner this year, closed for second. Both mares are owned by Ecurie Csl of Sorel-Tracy, Que.

Jody Jamieson drove Ultimate Desbi N, leaving from post six for the early lead before giving way to the oncoming Absolution and (Trevor Henry) as they arrived at the quarter pole in :27.2. Ultimate Desbi N tracked in the two-hole from there though middle splits of :55.1 and 1:22.3 while 3-5 favourite Lets N Joy N (J.R. Plante) got the jump on returning 2024 Horse of the Year Chantilly (Louis-Philippe Roy) out of fifth, provoking that foe three-wide in the final turn. As the mares hit the stretch, Ultimate Desbi N pounced from the pocket to go by Absolution with the first-over Lets N Joy N chasing into second a length back. Absolution settled for third.

A New Zealand-bred mare by Ultimate Machette out of Motu Racy Girl, Ultimate Desbi N picked up her second win at the Open level and now has five victories in 17 starts since arriving in Canada this year, with seasonal earnings of $112,278.

She paid $6 to win as the 3-1 second choice.
