Gingras Dominant, Okusko Gets Milestone In Mass. Finals
Yannick Gingras won half of the eight $232,394 Massachusetts Breeders Stakes finals in a five-win day on Thursday, Oct. 29 at Plainridge Park, while Jessica Okusko trained a 73-1 winner in a championship event to hit 1,000 career victories.
Included in those five Gingras wins was the most impressive performance of the day, that of the three-year-old trotting gelding Geologic, who after winning his three preliminary stakes legs - two in record times - put himself in the record books once again and became a two-time Massachusetts champion.
Mothers Moni (Dexter Dunn) shot right to the lead while Geologic drafted in second. After getting to the quarter in :27 and half in :55.2, Mothers Moni and Geologic separated from the field by 10 lengths to three-quarters in 1:22.3, creating a match race in the final panel. Mothers Moni held the lead to seven-eighths, but Geologic then went on the attack and trotted clear in mid-stretch to a 3-1/2-length victory in 1:51. Kingmaker (Brett Beckwith) was third.
The time was a new lifetime mark for the winner and broke the track and stakes records for a sophomore trotting gelding.
Geologic ($2.40), a son of Captain Corey-Crystalline, is owned by Paul Kelley Racing Stable, Go For Glory Stable LLC, Matthew Lamont and VIP Internet Stable LLC and trained by Paul Kelley. Ray Campbell Jr. bred Geologic, who is now 11-for-22 lifetime. The win was his fifth straight.
Okusko achieved her milestone win as Manador rallied down the lane to land the upset in the three-year-old male pace division.
Beantown Dragon (Brett Beckwith) reached the quarter on top in :26.3 before Altair Blue Chip (Dexter Dunn) rushed to the front on the way to the :55.3. half. The action continued up the backstretch, where Hard To Forget (Yannick Gingras) started rolling from fourth and took the lead on the outside passing three-quarters in 1:23.2 with Manador (Nick Graffam) still fifth. Hard To Forget put three lengths between himself and the field in the last turn, but when they entered the stretch, Mr Mctygue (Matty Athearn), Alcatraz Blue Chip (Corey Callahan) and Manador closed in. Manador led the charge widest of all and bolted to win by a head in 1:54.2. Alcatraz Blue Chip was third, a neck off.
Manador ($148.20) is owned and was bred by M&L of Delaware LLC. The son of Bulldog Hanover-Count To Three won for the sixth time in 25 career starts.
Okusko made her training debut 2007 and has since posted outstanding numbers while regularly competing in the New York Sire Stakes and on the Grand Circuit. One of the biggest three-year-old stars of 2015 came from Okusko’s barn as she developed Dudes The Man (1:48.4f, $807,398), whose major win was the Adios Pace that year.
Based out of Vernon, N.Y. and one of the regular top trainers at Vernon Downs, Okusko has been training for Wanda Polisseni’s Purple Haze Stable for many years and has developed a number of stars during that tenure as well. For her career, Okusko now has 1,000 wins, 806 seconds and 767 thirds from her 5,170 starts and has racked up $11.4 million in earnings.
Gingras got his first stakes win in the two-year-old male trot division with Once Upon Lindy, who made it four straight wins in the series.
Two Fifty (Dexter Dunn) took the early lead but made a break past the quarter in :28, leaving Once Upon Lindy to take the front. With Sparkling Lindy (Matt Kakaley) following in second, Once Upon Lindy reached the half in :57.4 and three-quarters in 1:26.4. He took a two-length advantage at the third station, increased the margin around the turn, and trotted home easily to win by two lengths in a lifetime-best 1:55.1. Sparkling Lindy was second-best, with Lucky Zette (Steve Smith) well back in third.
Once Upon Lindy ($2.60) is owned and was bred by K R Breeding LLC. Domenico Cecere trains the son of International Moni-Origin Story, now a four-time winner in eight appearances.
Gingras next won with Lindy Believer in the final for two-year-old distaff pacers as the filly completed a Massachusetts Breeders Stakes sweep.
There was a lot of action through the :27.4 quarter as Sweetness Lindy (Mitchell Cushing), Lindy Believer and Griselda (Dexter Dunn) all took turns on the point before reaching the half in :55.4. Griselda then took the field up the backstretch, where Lindy Believer pulled from second and flew to the front as she passed three-quarters in 1:23.4. Lindy Believer rounded the last turn all by herself and opened up a 4-1/4-length edge as she crossed the line first in 1:52.4. Chase News Network (Jeff Gregory) rolled for second over Stayoutofmylane (Brett Beckwith).
Lindy Believer ($2.40), a daughter of Captaintreacherous-Believe Its Lindy, is owned by Engblom Farm LLC, R A W Equine Inc., Evans Nation and Hickory Hollow Stables. Petter Engblom trains the Lindy Farms of Connecticut-bred filly, who is now five-for-12.
Gingras completed his stakes grand slam and five-pack on the day with the two-year-old male pacer Bacchus Blue Chip, who followed last week's record-breaking performance with a Massachusetts championship triumph.
Top Notch Treasure (Bruce Ranger) led to the quarter in :26.3 before Sting Me (Mitchell Cushing) came flying outside to secure command before the :54.1 half. But Bacchus Blue Chip then made a bid and was on top and pulling away at three-quarters in 1:22.3. Bacchus Blue Chip rounded the turn and entered the stretch alone, eventually winning by 4-1/4 lengths in 1:52. Bastonata Bluechip (Dexter Dunn) took second after a third-quarter charge, with Flint Mccullough (Matty Athearn) third.
Bacchus Blue Chip ($2.10), also a New York Excelsior Series champion, has won seven of 11 starts for owners Burke Racing Stable LLC, Larry Karr, Libby and Purnel and Frank Baldachino. Ron Burke trains the winning son of American Ideal-Sunnynseventyfive.
Gingras also won with Vera ($3) in the card opener, a $35,211 Romper Room event. The Hall of Fame driver is second in North America in earnings this year and is 295-for-1,655 on the season.
Lindy In My Dreams repeated as a Massachusetts champion as she took the event for three-year-old filly trotters.
Dexter Dunn had her on top of the field to the quarter in :27.1 before yielding to Cash Out Express (Yannick Gingras), who continued to the half in :56. With Adios My Lindy (Brett Beckwith) sitting third, positions remained unchanged to three-quarters in 1:23.4 and around the last turn. At the top of the stretch, Lindy In My Dreams tipped out and trotted by Cash Out Express to win by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:52.4, which was a new lifetime mark. Adios My Lindy (Brett Beckwith) finished third.
Lindy In My Dreams ($15.40), a daughter of Ready For Moni-Lindy Of My Dreams, is owned and was bred by Lindy Farms of Connecticut and is trained by Domenico Cecere. She is now seven-for-19 lifetime.
The two-year-old trotting fillies then took to the track in a race won by Luxe Lindy, who turned a pocket ride into victory.
After several horses made breaks off the gate, Nannys Ce Ce (Jeff Gregory) took control as Luxe Lindy (Tyler Miller) settled in second. After fractions of :28.2, :58.4 and 1:27.3, Nannys Ce Ce and Luxe Lindy were clear of the field by 10 lengths around the last turn. When the pair entered the stretch, Luxe Lindy trotted right by Nannys Ce Ce by two lengths to prevail in 1:56.3. Wicked Wink (Jimmy Whittemore) was third.
Luxe Lindy ($6.20) has won three races in 12 outings for owners Andy Miller Stable, Jean Goehlen, Little E LLC and Coyote Wynd Farms and trainer Julie Miller. K R Breeding LLC and Preferred Equine Mkt. Inc. bred Luxe Lindy, a daughter of Walner-Decadence.
The final division, for three-year-old filly pacers, was won by the Bettors Delight-Bronskimackenzie A miss Vainglorious, who moved early and late for the win.
Seafood Treasure (Bruce Ranger), Vainglorious (Dexter Dunn) and Two Twenty Swift (Yannick Gingras) were involved in a shuffle through the :28.2 opener and half in :56.3, with Two Twenty Swift in front at the midway point. Two Twenty Swift was challenged by Sweet Cindy Lou (Corey Callahan) heading up the backstretch to three-quarters in 1:24. Two Twenty Swift and Sweet Cindy Lou continued to battle in the stretch, but it was Vainglorious who found room just before the wire and shot through to beat both by three-quarters of a length in 1:53. Sweet Cindy Lou finished second, followed by Two Twenty Swift.
Tahnee Camilleri trains Vainglorious ($12.60), whom she bred and co-owns with David Kryway. The winning filly upped her career record to seven-for-24.
