Desert Park Community Honours Knight As Racing Resumes
Harness racing resumed at Desert Park Raceway on Monday, Oct. 26 following the tragic passing of driver Scott Knight last week, with the local racing community honouring the highly regarded horseman with a memorial walk to the finish line.
Before Monday's card began, trainer Darren Poloway's pacer Wits Beach finished Knight's last mile on the racetrack, leading a memorial walk through the final quarter and crossing the wire with the racing community following down the stretch.
At the conclusion of the memorial walk, the group gathered in front of the grandstand for a moment of silence to honour the man who left a lasting mark on the industry as a respected horseman and talented competitor. A husband, father, son, brother and uncle, Knight, 52, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 18 after being involved in a racing accident.
As racing resumed with participants donning blue ribbons in memory of Knight, the $30,000 B.C. Bred Stakes for four-year-old male pacers that was postponed from last weekend was held on Monday.
Outlaw Playmymovie was a front-stepping victor in the event, cruising on the engine with Brandon Campbell aboard for trainer Rebecca Kanak.
Leaving from post four in the scratched down field of five as the 1-5 favourite, Outlaw Playmymovie sprinted off the wings to cross over in front of the field and lead the charge to the opening quarter in :28.4. Stainless Steel (David Hudon) was unable to find a seat on the first turn and raced first-over at the leader's wheel to the halfway point in :57.4. Stainless Steel continued to apply pressure in the third stanza, pushing Outlaw Playmymovie to three-quarters in 1:26.1.
Stainless Steel began to retreat on the final turn when Pullaway Ace (Blake Piwniuk) tipped three-wide and charged alongside the leader. Outlaw Playmymovie turned away that foe when Fubar Bundy (Tyson Jacoby) popped the pocket at the head of the lane to take his shot at the pacesetter. Outlaw Playmymovie was game on the lead, holding Fubar Bundy off by three parts of a length on the wire in 1:55.3. Cash On De Man (Kelly Hoerdt) rallied for the show spot.
The victory was the fourth straight and 11th of 20 starts this season for Outlaw Playmymovie. The four-year-old Shadow Play-Pure Movement gelding is owned by Trevor Williams of Winnipeg, Man., Aurel Vodon of Virden, Man., and Morning Line Inc of Airdrie, Alta. Outlaw Playmymovie sports a career bankroll of $80,832 following his 14th career victory.
