Plainridge Wins For Pembroke Southie, Unevergonnagethis
A pair of $28,169 conditioned races -- one for fillies and mares on the pace and one for trotters -- took top billing at Plainridge Park on Friday afternoon, Oct. 23 with both winners throwing big miles.
First was the upper-level conditioned pace for fillies and mares where Pembroke Southie posted a moderate upset at odds of 6-1. Pembroke Southie and driver Kyle Swift got away fifth as favourite One More Bet (Matty Athearn) parked Joansrisingstar N (Jay Randall) to the quarter in :26.1. Joansrisingstar N crossed over in front of the stands and then reached the half in :54 flat. At that point, Beantown Deuce (Mitchell Cushing) was leading an outer flow and brought Mrs Cheese (Kevin Switzer Jr.) and Pembroke Southie with her. Beantown Deuce took the lead at the 1:22.2 three-quarters, leaving Mrs Cheese and Pembroke Southie still advancing in the breeze around the last turn. Just before entering the stretch, Pembroke Southie went three-wide around Mrs Cheese and blew by everybody down the lane to win by 1-3/4 lengths in 1:50.4. Twin B Sunkissed (Bruce Rangers) closed off the winner's cover to place ahead of Mrs Cheese.
The win was the fifth of the year in 21 starts for Pembroke Southie, who returned $14.40 to her backers at the betting windows. The six-year-old Always B Miki-UF Dragons Queen mare is trained by Jaymes McCassey for owners Glenn Goller of Delray Beach, Florida and Stephen Demeter of Tarrytown, New York.
A few races later in the matching upper-level conditioned trot, favourite Unevergonnagethis went gate to wire to score his third win in his last four starts. Unevergonnagethis and driver Bruce Ranger left from post four and trotted heartily on the point through quarters of :28.1, :57.2 and 1:25.3, while Just Roxy (Matty Athearn) sat in the pocket. With the rest of the field about three lengths behind, Unevergonnagethis and Just Roxy fled the scene around the last turn. When they straightened for home, Just Roxy made a bid towards the leader, but Unevergonnagethis just kept pulling away and won by 2-1/2 lengths in 1:54. Tcs Brenda (Kevin Switzer Jr.) rounded out the top three.
Just a head shy of victory in his Plainridge debut last week, former Ontario Sires Stakes Gold winner Unevergonnagethis paid $5.20 to as the bettors' choice. The seven-year-old Muscle Mass-Muchness gelding is currently campaigned by trainer Enrico Robinson and owner Pollack Racing of Venetia, Pennsylvania.
Racing will resume at Plainridge Park on Monday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. and there will be a $17,847 carryover in the Wicked Hi-5 pentafecta wager in the sixth race.
