Chiodo, Schadel Reign In Sulky Queens Splits
Stacy Chiodo and Linda Schadel took top honours in the Sulky Queens Driving Series events at Rosecroft Raceway on Thursday, Oct. 22, winning their respective events featuring female drivers.
In the first Sulky Queens dash, a $8,803 second-level pace, Chiodo saved ground from midfield with Alexandra Goldin trainee Lucky Streak, angled the six-year-old Luck Be Withyou-Midnight Blue gelding off the pegs heading into the far turn, and rallied him past pacesetter Crush Hanover (driven by Lauren Harmon) to post a 1-1/4-length, 1:55 victory. Major Ace (Stacey McLenaghan) finished third.
Lucky Streak, whom Spencer Goldin owns, paid $5.60 to win as the 9-5 favourite.
Chiodo, a New Jersey native who serves as a United States Trotting Association director, has driven the winners of 152 races and trained the winners of 454 races since launching her career in 2002.
The second event, a $7,394 first-level pace, saw Schadel push Northern Network clear of Slick Fella (Marianna Monaco) off the first turn before then evading mild pressure through the remainder of a 1:56.2 mile and keeping a belated rally from runner-up Redding Hanover (Harmon) 1-1/2 lengths at bay. Always Virgil (Doreen Dailey) finished third.
Schadel, a New Jersey native who plies her trade in central Pennsylvania, scored her sixth career driving win by piloting Northern Network ($24.60), an eight-year-old Net Ten Eom-Lets Go B B gelding, to an 11-1 upset for owner/trainer Eugene Robinson. She also has 620 training wins to her credit since harnessing her first starter in 2003.
The 2026 Sulky Queens series has two remaining stops: the Meadowlands, in East Rutherford, N.J., on Friday (Oct. 23), and Shenandoah Downs, in Woodstock, Va., on Saturday (Oct. 24).
In the evening's featured event, an $14,789 upper-level conditioned trot, Fruit Snacker and driver Tony Morgan overcame post nine, cleared Victor Laszlo (Eric Davis) for control with just over a lap to go, and posted a 1-1/4-length, 1:54.4 victory. Secret Jet (Brandon Givens) finished third, another 4-3/4 lengths behind.
Willard Reynolds trains Fruit Snacker, a four-year-old Dover Dan-First Avenue gelding who paid $2.60 to win, for Mark Howard.
Live harness racing returns to Rosecroft with a 13-race card on Monday (Oct. 26); the 50-cent Jackpot Hi-5, offered in the finale, will have a carryover of $9,597. First post is 7:15 p.m. (EDT).
