Harvest Series Double For Benn, Stormont
Trainer Kevin Benn and owner Stormont Meadows swept the pair of $35,000 Harvest Series first-leg divisions for sophomore trotting males as Stormont Fast Boy and Stormont Shanlyboy each won their contests on Sunday, Oct. 18 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Stormont Fast Boy earned the intra-barn bragging rights with the faster of the two clockings, winning the first division in 1:53.2 with Bob McClure aboard. The gelding travelled fifth as Sendi Ka (Tyler Borth) took the top past a :28 first-quarter flurry then yielded to a retake by Mike Me Up (James MacDonald) before the :56.2 half. Stormont Fast Boy shifted onto cover going to three-quarters in 1:24.4 and unleashed a :27.4 kick to power clear by 2-1/2 lengths. Crunchintheodds (Doug McNair) battled on to nab second over Mike Me Up.
Stormont Fast Boy’s win comes two starts after his first stakes victory in the final preliminary leg of the Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots. The son of Muscle Mass-Countess Stormont, also bred by Long Sault, Ont.-based Stormont Meadows, is three-for-seven this year after finishing second in his one start at two and now has $61,370 in earnings. He paid $10.90 to win.
Stormont Shanlyboy, coming off a narrow place finish in his Ontario Sires Stakes Super Final, also impressed as he brushed and crushed in the second division. Tyler Jones took the pocket behind Maize And Blue (Doug McNair) to the quarter in :28.2, then eased to the lead before a :57.3 half. The gelding aimed to bottom out the field with a dash to three-quarters in 1:25.3 and succeeded in his mission, trotting away down the lane and gliding across the line to prevail by 3-3/4 lengths in 1:54.1. L P Bay (Travis Henry) rolled out of fourth for second over Trouble With Names (Bob McClure).
Stormont Shanlyboy, another homebred for Eric Baker’s Stormont Meadows, is now five-for-19 lifetime with $203,920 in earnings. Sunday’s win was his fifth of 16 outings this season. The win price was $2.10.
Both $35,000 pacing divisions were won by sons of Bulldog Hanover with 1:50.1 efforts. Odds On Bullfrog ($2.20) made two moves to the top and was in control for the remainder on the way to a 1-1/4-length win. Travis Henry piloted the colt out of Odds On Naples for trainer Dr. Ian Moore.
Barracuda Hanover ($19) devoured ground late in a :26.1 final quarter to take the second pacing division by a nose. The colt, out of Bettors Chance, scored for driver Bob McClure and trainer Don Lindsey.
The Harvest Series is for Ontario-sired or -bred horses that are non-winners of $150,000 this season as of Sept. 30 or are in for a $100,000 claiming tag. The $100,000 finals for the three-year-old males are set for Oct. 25 at Mohawk.
