R Royal Port Sails Wire-To-Wire In Flamboro Preferred
R Royal Port embarked on a front-end voyage and reached home a coast-to-coast winner in the $14,500 Preferred Trot on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Flamboro Downs.
Austin Sorrie had the gelding leaving with the gate and landed him on the front as the field entered the first turn. The parked-out Allstar Goldi (Damian MacLellan) pressed on through the quarter in :28.1 to sit off the leader’s wheel through the half in :58.1 and onto the backstretch. Willowtime (Samuel Fillion) took over the outer tier with a move around the tiring Allstar Goldi to three-quarters in 1:28 but subsequently stalled, leaving R Royal Port a two-length leader straightening for home. P P E (Brady Galliers) gained at the pylons, and No Angel Like Me (Scott Coulter) arrived late between horses, but R Royal Port was wound down in the final metres as he stopped the clock in 1:58. No Angel Like Me nicked second late from P P E, a length behind the winner.
R Royal Port won a Preferred-level event for the first time since June and moved to six-for-24 on the year for trainer Gerard Demers and owner La Ferme Tag Inc. of Papineauville, Que. The seven-year-old son of Archangel-World Class Izzy is 27-for-111 lifetime and has earned $271,684. He paid $4.10 to win.
