Terrible Custard, Boleto A Mexico Win ABSS Dashes
Terrible Custard and Boleto A Mexico notched victories in the Albera Sires Stakes (ABSS) events for three-year-old pacers over a surface rated “good” Saturday, Oct. 10 at Century Mile.
Terrible Custard dug in to prevail in a tight finish in the $53,900 Alberta Princess final for fillies. From the second-tier post nine, she was fifth for Mike Hennessy though the :28.3 quarter then out behind Y V Four Roses (David Kelly), who was faltering first-over past the :56.3 half. Terrible Custard shifted wide going to three-quarters in 1:24.4, circled her cover, then wore down a resilient Blue Star Strike (Drew Campbell) and won in 1:54.3 by a half-length over the closing Lets Go Gals (Blake Piwniuk). Blue Star Strike finished third.
Terrible Custard, who also won the Alberta Marquis in August, is seven-for-16 this year for trainer Rod Hennessy and owner-breeder Lorne Duffield of Edmonton, Alta. The daughter of Custard The Dragon-Remember Terror has won eight of 24 career outings and earned $160,994. She paid $4.50 to win.
Boleto A Mexico stamped his authority with a pacesetting victory in the $53,600 Alberta Plainsmen final for males. The Captive Audience-Legs Like Tina colt rolled three-high into the turn and stretched past Outlaw Country On (David Kelly) to lead to a :27.1 first quarter. Heading a strung-out field into the rain, Boleto A Mexico hit the half in :57.1 and three-quarters in 1:25.1 and pulled away to a two-length victory in 1:55.2. Ruler Of Dragons (Phil Giesbrecht) came flying from last for second, narrowly out-sprinting Vladdy G (Logan Gillis).
Trainer Jamie Gray drove and trained Boleto A Mexico to the colt’s fourth win from 13 starts this year, bringing his career tally to six-for-18 with $87,330 in earnings. Gray co-owns him with Max Gibb of Millarville, Alta., 5 Amigos of Sturgeon County, Alta. and Aaron Malkin of Calgary, Alta. The win price was $11.80.
Shark Week snagged the $15,500 Preferred Handicap Pace to continue his latest streak of dominant form. Mike Hennessy crossed the gelding over from post seven to make front into a :26.2 first panel, then rated him to a :56 half before ordering an increased tempo to three-quarters in 1:23.4. With Hands Off Harry (Nathan Sobey) pushing at the outside and Ernesto Delacruz (Jean-Francois Gagne) grinding to the inner, Shark Week remained defiant to a length victory in 1:52.2. Ernesto Delacruz took second over Hands Off Harry.
Shark Week, Western Canada’s fastest-ever pacer, has rattled off four wins in a row for trainer Rod Hennessy and is eight-for-22 in 2026. The eight-year-old Vertical Horizon-Shark Gone Bad gelding has racked up 73 career wins and $631,635 in bankroll from 129 starts for owners Duffield and Rod Hennessy. He paid $3.60 to win.
